Thank you very much guys, as I changed my hdd for a new 500gb item a couple of years in pretty sure the original 160gb one may still be kicking around somewhere, so I'll just put xp on that, and presuming that my mobo has the correct connection on for a floppy drive ill just grab one from my stockpile of spares from the end of the 90s and run the machine with the lid off, not something I like to do if I can help it but for the short amount of time involved it's fine, not that the machine really seems to suffer as such because the error, it's certainly more responsive than with the old cpu in any case, so if it turns out I can't get it to run the update I'm not hugely worried.
