Our business has three HP Compaq Pro 6005 desktop PCs.
The computers are around five years old with the following basic specifications:
*AMD Athlon X2 B22 2.8GHz, Regor
*HP 3047h motherboard (socket AM3)
*AMD 785G (RS880) + SB750/710 chipset
*4GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM
*160GB 7200 RPM SATA Western Digital hard drive
*Windows 7 32-bit
Recently I decided to upgrade one of these PCs with the following:
*16GB PC-10600 DDR3 SDRAM (G Skill)
*256GB SATA Crucial Solid State Drive
*Windows 8.1 64-bit (clean install, old hard disk removed)
Everything went well with the exception of the display adapter. Windows Update did not detect the Radeon 4200 and did not install appropriate drivers.
The Display Port does not function, and the maximum resolution supported is 1280 x 1024. Installing the Catalyst display drivers from AMD's website does not work--attempting to open the Catalyst Control Center even gives an error message that there are no supported products.
I tried downloading the display driver from HP's website. Ominously, Windows 8/8.1 was not even listed as have available operating system. I tried both the Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium and Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit display drivers.
Neither worked.
What is wrong? Is there a solution? This is important to me as I wish to upgrade my other HP Compaq 6005s in the same way. Do I need to upgrade the BIOS or firmware in some way?
Additionally, I wish to upgrade the processor. Socket AM3 supports AMD Phenom six-core processors. However, I've heard horror stories of HP locking the BIOS to make it impossible to upgrade processors. Is there a list of supported processors for the HP 3047h motheboar?
