At the risk of reviving a slightly old thread..

We are having similar issues with a batch of 800 Elites we received over the Summer (we received over 1000 across our estate, and the issue is presenting itself on assorted ones).

From a COLD boot - as in switching it on 1st thing in the morning, we have a set of PCs which boot up saying there's no System disk.

If you CTRL ALT DEL, it continues to say there's no System disk.

If you press the power button and then immediately press it again, the PC will boot correctly.

From then on, you can reboot to your heart's content.

In experiments, I've found that if I power 1st thing in the morning and hit F9 to select the boot device, either the Hard drive AND DVD are missing, or the Hard drive is missing and the CD is present. What is consistent is that at least the Hard drive isn't available.

If I power off and quickly power up, then hit F9 then both CD and HD are available again.

Our replicated BIOS setup is:

UEFI = disabled

Legacy = enabled

Legacy1 = NIC

Legacy2 = Hard drive

(We're in an environment with PXE boot for imaging, so we need the NIC to boot first)

I can replicate the issue by powering down the PC for 2-3 minutes.

I've verified there's no USB pen/HD connected

I've had the hard drive replaced - no difference.

I've had the RAM replaced - no difference.

I've flashed it with the latest BIOS. This DOES cure the issue, but only because it re-enables UEFI and so my PXE boot is no longer available.

Can you please assist?

Hi,

The answer helped me to solve the BIOS update.

HP ProDesk 490 G1 Microtower PC
BIOS update L02 v02.19. 7/11/2014
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Strange enough this problem is widely spread. Even support technicals here in

Europe got trouble to find an answer,

Very surprising that over Firefox it is not working, must be done with download and run not

store in Internet Explorer

Here with

Regular Advisor

I did find the short,  precise answer.
Very good Senhor!

I don't have an Elite 800 but i believe that the motherboard must have the serial number (and possibly other data) added when the motherboard is replaced. Doing so will then allow the recovery process to continue as normal...

So, if your BIOS is similar to the Z210, then enter BIOS as normal, type CTRL-A and go to "System ID" which should now have a few more options available to you... Enter the required information but be warned you will only get one go... So if you're unsure what data to enter, get help from HP support... And if the motherboard is secondhand, you may not be able to change the serial number data and hense recovery may not work as expected or may not work at all...

If CTRL-A does not work and you have a non US keyboard, use the eqivalent key postions (CTRL-Q for the french i believe)...

If CTRL-A still does not work, then such Z210 mechanisms may not work on elite 800 and hopefully others can help..

Let us know how it works out :)

Googling "hp protected drive recovery" lead me to this post... Alternatively googling "hp drive encryption recovery" leads to this post...

Both seach results also point to a number of HP/McFee pdf docs on drive encryption, downloading and reading theses docs may help...

I guess you'll need access to another HP laptop with such encryption 'features' to be able to swap drives and decrypt your disk. In any case, i suspect you'll need the decryption keys which hopefully you have saved somewhere.

In most cases, encryption can be a right royal pain. Unless you need such encryption for legal or security reasons, simplest is to not use the feature...

PC Not Booting

Hi,

I've come to boot up a new PC, and when the power button is pressed, the light comes on, and the fan starts up for about a second, then everything stops.

After a few seconds or so, it tries again and the light coming on and fan starting up repeats.

I've tried different leads and different outlets, nothing has worked so far.

Suggestions welcome!!

Edit: PC is HP Compaq Elite 8300 Small Form Factor

Hello,

I am trying to upgrade my HP Compaq 8000 elite minitower convertible machine to 8gb RAM.

I have slotted in a new 4Gb DDR3 1333 U-DIMM  RAM stick into the motherboard but all I get is the beeping and the

red blinking fro the power LED. I have tried this on all the  slots but the result is the same.

According to HP, the RAM and the desktop are compatible. Kindly assisst

Thank you

Is there something more?? It still will not boot. Even after I hit F9 and I get the boot menu, I choose legacy and none of the choices will allow me to press enter..

Got it. The second part is to go back into setup. Go to Storage, Boot Order, then choose F5 to disable UEFI Boot Sources.

I've not jumped on this board for a little while so missed your post [ but that's the nature of forums :) ].

Anyway, having chips on both sides of a DIMM is not a guarantee of how the memory is ranked.

OEMs often use terms incorrectly and talk about sides rather than ranks thus confusing us mortals...

That's why JEDEC (an industry body) does not allow sides to be used and prefers the term rank...

It's best to look at the specs for your original DIMM (which worked) and check how the memory is arranged/ranked.

Then look at the specs for your 4G DIMMs and compare how the memory is arranged in these DIMMS.

The devil may be the differences in rank...

Also look at the Elite 8100 technical guide book which indicates your machine supports 512Mbit, 1Gbit 7 2Gbit non ECC memory technologies. It also states DDR3-SDRAM DIMMS must be

  • undustry standard 240pin
  • unbuffered non ECC PC3-8500 DDR3-1066 MHz compliant or PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz compliant
  • 1.5V DDR3 SDRAM DIMMS
  • support CAS latency 7 DDR3 1066MHz (7-7-7- timing) andCAS latency 9 DDR3 1333 MHz (9-9-9 timing)
  • contain mandatory JEDEC SPD information
  • computer supports singel and double sided DIMMS (but this is poor terminology HP)
  • computer supports DIMMS comstructed with x8 & x16 DDR devices; DIMMS constructed with x4 SDRAM are not supported.

You may also want to check all BIOS notes for your system as they may indicate if any memory changes were made (allowing bigger sized DIMMs)... Possibly, the limitations could also depend on the CPU you use as modern CPUs contain the memory controller on die (inside the chip) and not as a separate chip on the motherboard...

Lastly look at the Elite 8100 quick specs and check which memory is listed as supported and use that memory...

It may mean you wont be able to get 16GB or RAM (noting that HP's doc indicates 2G is largest DIMM yet states 16GB is possible... which i suspect is wrong)...

Cheers...

with hard drive installed and enabled i'm unable to enter in mebx menù, for enter with ctrl+p i have to disconnect or disable hard drive first.

The pc worked without problem until the bios update to 1.32 version... after upgrade i'm unable to make boot....

I think that bios downgrade is not possible...

I've tried to change the AMT settings in mebx utility and set the standard boot mode, but under "intel amt configuration", the "VA Configuration" option is missing....

Please help me... I want to disable and remove all this settings!!!

HP 7300 Elite MT - Unknown Power on Password

Hi,

I have started with a new company, and processing all the spare units we have for Asset management.  I have this 7300 Elite that is resonably specc'd but has a "power-on Password" set.  Being new I dont know what it is or could be.  There's no one I could ask either.

I have read you can clear the password with jumpers but that hasn't worked.
